My Dear Brethren,
For Freemasons, September brings with it a seasonal transition that reminds us of our alchemical journey and the related labors aimed at transforming into a better version of ourselves. As noted with frequency in Carol Dweck’s book Mindset, a key component of this necessary journey centers on subduing the ego. Truer words were never spoken. Too often we bear witness to the corrosiveness of those who carry themselves with an entitled, self-important manner – behavior that erodes harmony and engenders ill-will. The start to forestalling such unwelcome behavior begins with thinking of yourself less (as opposed to thinking less of yourself), followed by a critical self-examination.
On a different but related slant, many harbor the frailty of not wanting to appear inadequate. Such “fears of failing” typically manifest to the point where it limits one’s experiences and missed learning opportunities. Allowing ourselves the permission-to-fail in order to ultimately improve our undertakings bestows benefits in the long run. The alternative leaves one in an artificial comfort zone that inevitably ends up constraining necessary personal growth.
As to Lodge this month, we’ll start by noting that accidents happen -- some more serious than others. In medical emergencies, professional help can be minutes away when seconds count. To the extent we may find ourselves in such situations (hopefully rarely), our one meeting this month features a presentation on practical emergency medicine. In keeping with our deepest Masonic principles, these critical skills and techniques can be developed by each of us employing proper instruction and directed practice.
Sincerely and Fraternally Yours, R.W. Michael S. Rothman, PGC Worshipful Master
